Carrie Pilby - Book & Movie Review

‘Carrie Pilby’ was a very interesting experience for me because I watched and utterly fell in love with the movie before I knew that it was based on the book by Caren Lissner. Usually, I am firmly of the opinion that the book is always better than the movie, but with ‘Carrie Pilby’ I had the unique experience of enjoying the movie, and then being able to enjoy the book in a way that enhanced the movie because it added many details, but since I had first enjoyed the movie, I didn’t feel let down in any way by either of them.

The story follows Carrie Pilby, a 19-year-old genius who graduated from Harvard a year ago at the age of 18. Throughout the story Carrie deals with a matter of betrayal by her father, and a feeling of being let down by the world. She sees the world in black and white in a way, with morals being the most important part of being human, and immorality being entirely unforgivable. She deals with her own immorality throughout the story, and in the end, it seems as though she has found her place in the world. She meets many people who fall along the spectrum of moral to immoral, and overall, she comes out of it all being pretty alright. The story doesn’t explicitly state how it feels about the moral questions of it all, but in the end, the message is that you can’t change people simply because you think they ought to be better, but you can be happy with yourself, and really, as long as you are comfortable with yourself and perhaps with a few good friends, then you will be okay, and probably pretty happy too.

I really enjoy both the book and the movie, but I must admit, I watch the movie quite a bit more than I read the book. It is one of my favorite movies to put on in the background to bring a sense of peace into my life. It might make you a little sad at times, and perhaps rather angry in some ways, but overall, it is a heartwarming story that I find myself turning to over and over again.
